Today’s message is THE PERSON AND WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT! Here is what I hope this message accomplishes today. I hope it brings balance to your understanding of the Holy Spirit. You see, too many people…even Pentecostal people like us…focus on signs and wonders, and speaking in tongues, and miracles…and the gifts of the Spirit…and the presence of God…and that’s kinda it! They are out of balance! Did you know that among some Pentecostals...there is an unhealthy belief that the Holy Spirit is only concerned with the miracles and sings and wonders and manifestations! That is absolutely unhealthy! The truth is…the Holy Spirit is intricately involved in the life of every follower of Christ!

This morning I want to talk to you about GROWING IN LOVE FOR THE CHURCH! Did you notice the progression of this series? Grow in love…for Christ, your husband/wife, family/children, the church! That is the order that we need to have established in our lives! We do not ever want to sacrifice our marriages or our families for the church! That is one reason why we struggle with balance…here at First Assembly.

Today’s message is about GROWING IN LOVE FOR YOUR MARRIAGE. Marriage is special and significant for the Christ follower…at least it should be. Why? Because our marriages are to be living examples of God’s relationship with the church. How HE loves us…and how HE wants what is best for us! How He gave himself…sacrificed himself…so that we could be all that we have been created to be. Our response to HIS sacrificial love…is submission. We submit ourselves to HIS leadership, love, care and concern. That is what Paul was writing about in Ephesians 5! Our marriages should communicate to the world…something about God’s love! We need to grow in love for our marriage!

Today’s message is about Growing in your love for Christ. How do we grow in our love for Christ? Did you know that there are steps to grow in your love for Christ? Said, another way…did you know that there are levels or depths of love that we can grow in Christ? Just listen to Paul’s prayer for the church at Ephesus! In Eph 3:18-19 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. The deeper we go…the more we grow in love for Christ…the more complete we become!

Today we are going to talk about HOW TO GROW. Just as a baby learns to walk...he must take more than 1 or 2 or 3 steps. If he is going to learn to walk…he must learn to take many NEXT STEPS! Walking is just part of a child’s capabilities. With patience and persistence…a child can walk, skip, jog, run, and a whole lot more!

I read a story the other day about how Arabian horses are trained in the middle east. The horses must learn to fully obey their master. This obedience is tested by depriving the horse of water for many days and then turning it loose near water. As the horse gets to the edge of the water, and just before they drink the much-needed water. The trainer blows his whistle. If the horse has learned to obey it will turn around and come back to the trainer who then gives it as much water as it needs. The trainer knows what his horse needs and will not allow it to die of thirst, but the horse must trust him. In the same way…God knows what His children need and will to supply it, but we must trust and obey Him. Today, I want to talk to you about growing in obedience! Learning to obey is paramount. We need to especially obey the voice of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word so that we will continue to grow and mature as a believer!

: This morning we are starting a new series. More than just a series…a theme for the year. Our theme this year is next steps! What is your next step. What is the next thing that you need to do to continue growing in Christ? What is your next level? What area do you need to grow in? Where is God leading you? Some people just don’t know what their next step is…some people may think they have gone as far as they can go…and the result is their spiritual life has plateaued. Some people have gotten so busy in life…that they have lost sight of what God is asking them to do next.

This morning’s sermon will be a little different! I like to use variation when teaching and preaching. Sometimes…doing things different helps us to see things, hear things, and even feel things differently…than if we used straight teaching and preaching. Jesus did not always preach…sometimes…he told parables…he used every day examples. Sometimes he performed miracles…sometimes he let his actions speak…remember when he forgave the woman caught in adultery…that was not a sermon…it was an action. Remember when he spoke to the fig tree and it died…that was not a sermon…it was an action! Here is the key…Jesus was always teaching the truths of the kingdom! So this morning…our service will be a little different…it is my hope and prayer…that it will help all of us learn the truths of the kingdom!

One of my favorite things about the Christmas story is it is filled with miracles.  We are reminded that God does miracles. We are reminded that God does miracles for regular people. Some people tend to think that only special people get miracles.  We may not ever say that…but we may feel it.  We need to remember that Joseph and Mary were just regular people. Just like us!
